I am the Hungry Wolf,
I tell myself. I’m 10 miles into an 18 mile run. I’m getting hungry, but I
don’t eat. And I grin fiercely to myself. I’m not trying to starve myself. I’m
not trying to lose weight. I’m trying to get faster. I’m improving the hunt. At
some point, in some race, I’m going to be 20 miles in and get hungry. And there
will still be one person between me and the finish line. I want to be ready for
that hunger. I want that hunger to bring me confidence in it’s familiarity. Anyone
can race when they feel good. But hunger hurts. Hunger can rob you of your
strength. It weakens your resolve. But if you want to win, the hunt is only
starting when the wolf gets hungry. I am
the hungry wolf.
